MS SPRINT TRIATHLON RACE INFORMATION
MS SPRINT TRIATHLON PRE-RACE REGISTRATION/PACKET PICK-UP: Friday, July 9, from 5-7 PM or Saturday, July 10, from 2-5 PM at Town Square in Waterville Valley. Please bring a photo ID and your USA Triathlon card (if you’re a member) to registration. YOU MUST HAVE ID! USAT requires that all athletes show proper identification, and since we have no way of verifying USAT membership at the race site, it is your responsibility to bring your USAT card OR print out your proof of membership at www.usatriathlon.org if you have lost your card. All members of a relay team must be present to pick-up the relay packet UNLESS all relay members purchased a USAT one-day license online. All competitors will receive a “Winning Time” time chip at registration which MUST be worn on race day.
PARKING: Parking is available at the Black Bear Lodge, Waterville Valley Conference Center, Village Condos, Recreation Department, and Snow’s Mountain. Parking on the race course is not permitted. Parking begins at 5:30 am, and Police will direct you to the appropriate lots. We strongly encourage arriving early. We also suggest getting dropped-off at the race site or carpooling. Please make sure you allow adequate time for parking… we want everyone to have plenty of time for pre-race preparations! For those athletes staying at Watervillle Valley and it’s resorts, you may easily walk to the race start from your resort parking lots.
REGISTRATION: Once you’ve parked, make your way to the registration tent, located next to the transition area (near the Ice Arena and Town Square). If you haven’t registered on Friday or Saturday, this will be the first thing you do on race morning. Registration starts at 5:30 AM. You’ll pick up your packet, which will include your swim cap, bib number, bike frame number (big sticker), helmet number (small sticker) and your Timing Chip. You’ll also pick up your goodie bag and race shirt. Then, proceed to body marking. Next, head to the transition area to rack your bike. MC Cycle & Sport will be available for last minute bike emergencies
PRE-RACE MEETING: Sunday, July 11, at 7:10 AM at transition. Black Fly Tri is a non-drafting triathlon with race officials. All current USAT rules will be in effect. Wet suits are encouraged. The average water temperature for Corcoran’s Pond at this time of year is 70 degrees. All are encouraged to attend this meeting to go over rules, procedures, course layout, and race-day activities.
RACE DAY: Once you’ve parked and have picked up your packet, make your way to body marking, located next to the transition area. This will be the first thing you do on race morning. Volunteers will body mark you with your number and age before you proceed to the transition area. Next, head to the transition area to rack your bike in its assigned spot. Each bike rack spot is numbered, and will match your bib number. Your “Winning Time” time chip must be secured around the ANKLE. NO CHIP=NO TIME. You must wear the swim cap issued at registration and be ready to start in numerical order. A short ‘race-day reminders’ meeting will commence at 7:10 AM, followed by the National Anthem. Please allow time for the short walk down to the swim start. The first swimmer will start at 7:30 am. All athletes must be out of the transition area by 7:30 am when the first swimmer starts. The swim is a time trial start. Athletes will line up according to their race number and swim cap color, in numerical order. Athletes will then be sent over the timing mat individually at 5 second intervals, to begin their swim. Typical water temperature in Corcoran’s Pond is 70 degrees F. There will be lifeguards, boats and kayaks on the TYR SWIM course to assist you if needed. The TYR SWIM is a 1 loop .25 mile counterclockwise rectangle. The turn buoys are large, red TYR tetrahedrons, the intermediate buoys will be orange cylinders. Athletes will keep all buoys to their left.
After completing the swim, you will transition to the 15 mile MAVIC BIKE course. You must buckle your helmet before you take your bike off the rack, and keep it buckled until after you re-rack your bike. Triathletes are encouraged to bring a water bottle on the course. There will be lead and sag vehicles as well as 2 motorcycle teams for safety and draft monitoring. MC CYCLE AND SPORT will be patrolling the course to aid with any mechanical problems. Please note that you’re required to fix your own bike, per USAT rules. Don’t wait for or expect help, you could be waiting a long time! MC CYCLE AND SPORT will be on the scene to do everything they can to make sure you finish the race. No roads are completely closed to traffic. It is your responsibility to know the race course, to follow the race officials’ instructions, and to observe all USAT rules. ALL TURNS WILL BE CLEARLY MARKED WITH SPRAY CHALK , SIGNS, AND MANNED WITH VOLUNTEERS AND POLICE OFFICERS. PAY ATTENTION!! Course maps are available on the website, www.blackflytri.com, and will also be available at packet pickup. There will be maps posted next to the registration tent. Please use caution and brake when cycling downhill … you will pick up speed very quickly! Always stay to the right of the roadway and do not cross the center line. Please dismount from your bike at the marked location before entering the transition area.
After the bike, you will transition to the 3 mile RUN. Please remember to wear your race number on the front at all times. There will be 2 aid stations on the out-and-back course. There will also be an aid station as you exit the swim and when you start your run. Please note that all runners will be recorded at the run turn-around… failure to be identified at the run turn-around will result in disqualification. All “Winning Time” time chips will be collected at the run finish line. There is a $35 fee for any lost or non-returned chip. It takes many volunteers to put on an event like the Black Fly Tri… when you are out on the course or at the race site, please take a moment to thank our volunteer staff for all that they do.
As a courtesy to all athletes, YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED BACK INTO THE TRANSITION AREA TO RETRIEVE YOUR BIKE AND BELONGINGS UNTIL THE LAST CYCLIST HAS FINISHED THE BIKE COURSE, AND HAS STARTED THE RUN. This is a safety issue and a way to support your fellow participants. This will be at approximately 9:30 AM. If you need additional clothing to wear upon finishing your race, please utilize the DRY CLOTHES BAG Tent, located next to the finish line. You may pick up a bag at the DRY CLOTHES BAG Tent, at Registration, or you may use your own bag. Label your bag with your bib number and place in the appropriate spot in the tent. You will have access to this as soon as you exit the de-chipping area after you finish the race.
MUSCLE MILK RECOVERY ZONE: As soon as you cross the finish line, you’ll receive your finisher’s water bottle, towel, and Black Fly Beer Buck. Ahead, you’ll see the Recovery Zone. This is a chance for you to recover and grab a snack, before heading to the Food Area, located 30 yards from here. PLEASE NOTE THE RECOVERY ZONE IS NOT YOUR MAIN POST-RACE meal. The Food Tent is where you’ll grab your post-race meal. For a complimentary Coors Light, bring your Black Fly Beer Buck to the Diamond’s Edge North, Legends 1291 Sports Bar, Coyote Grill, or the Snowy Owl Inn. You may redeem it at these spots for your free beer.
BUST A MOOOOOOOOVE: A special award for the best finish line celebration will be presented during the awards ceremony. Dust off your best dance moves. Following the race, you’ll be able to view the finish line celebration archived videos on our tel-E-Vision at www.endorfunsports.com.
